Getting Started with Therapy:

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If something in your life feels overwhelming, stuck, emotionally exhausting, or like it could feel better than it does right now — that’s enough of a reason to reach out.

You do not need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy.

Many people begin therapy during:

  • periods of high stress
  • relationship difficulties
  • burnout
  • life transitions
  • identity exploration
  • grief or loss
  • emotional overwhelm
  • times when they simply want to better understand themselves

Therapy is for regular people navigating real life — not just emergencies or major crises.

I’ve tried therapy before and it didn’t help. Why would this be different?

This is more common than many people realize.

Research consistently shows that the relationship between a therapist and client is one of the strongest predictors of meaningful progress in therapy. Sometimes previous therapy experiences simply were not the right fit.

At North Shore Mental Health Services, we prioritize:

  • authentic human connection
  • collaborative care
  • affirming and culturally responsive therapy
  • helping clients feel safe, understood, and respected

We take therapist fit seriously because feeling connected to your therapist matters.

What does the first therapy session look like?

The first session is a conversation — not a performance or evaluation.

Your therapist will ask questions about:

  • what brings you to therapy
  • your current challenges
  • your goals
  • relationships and history
  • previous therapy experiences

You’ll also have space to ask questions and get a feel for whether the therapist feels like a good fit for you.

It’s completely okay to come into therapy unsure where to begin.

How do I get matched with the right therapist?

When you reach out, please let us know:

  • what you’re looking for support with
  • scheduling preferences
  • insurance
  • therapist preferences

From there, we thoughtfully recommend a therapist whose personality, specialties, and approach align with your needs.

If the fit does not feel right after a session or two, we will help explore other options.

Do you offer online therapy?

Yes.

We offer secure online therapy sessions for clients located throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin.

Telehealth can be a helpful option for people balancing busy schedules, distance, accessibility needs, parenting responsibilities, or personal comfort preferences.

Therapy Approaches and Areas of Support:

What types of therapy do you offer?

Our therapists utilize a range of evidence-based and relational approaches tailored to each client’s needs, goals, and preferences.

Modalities may include:

  • EMDR Therapy
  • Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART)
  • Internal Family Systems (IFS)
  • Somatic Therapy
  • Art Therapy
  • Play Therapy
  • Trauma-Informed Therapy

We do not believe therapy is one-size-fits-all.

Do you offer trauma therapy?

Yes.

Many of our therapists specialize in trauma-informed therapy and work with clients navigating:

  • PTSD symptoms
  • childhood trauma
  • relational trauma
  • difficult past experiences
  • nervous system dysregulation
  • chronic stress responses

We offer trauma-focused approaches including EMDR, ART, somatic therapy, and other relational approaches.

Do you offer therapy for anxiety and depression?

Yes.

We regularly support clients navigating:

  • anxiety
  • panic
  • chronic stress
  • overthinking
  • burnout
  • depression
  • emotional overwhelm
  • low motivation
  • emotional disconnection

Therapy can help clients better understand patterns, build coping tools, strengthen emotional regulation, and feel more connected to themselves again.

Do you specialize in LGBTQIA+ affirming therapy?

Yes.

North Shore Mental Health Services is a sexuality and gender affirming practice.

We proudly support LGBTQIA+ individuals, couples, and families and strive to create a therapeutic environment that feels safe, affirming, respectful, and collaborative.

We do not view queerness or gender diversity as something that needs to be “fixed.” We are here to support your full identity and lived experience.

Do you work with neurodivergent clients?

Absolutely.

We value neurodiversity and strive to provide affirming care that recognizes and respects different ways of thinking, processing, communicating, and experiencing the world.

Our therapists adapt therapy to the individual rather than expecting individuals to fit into rigid frameworks.

What does “trauma-informed” mean?

Trauma-informed therapy recognizes that many emotional struggles, coping behaviors, and relationship patterns are connected to difficult experiences people have lived through.

Rather than asking “What’s wrong with you?” trauma-informed care asks:
“What happened to you?”

This approach prioritizes:

  • emotional safety
  • collaboration
  • nervous system awareness
  • compassion over shame
  • understanding patterns within context

What to Expect from Therapy:

Do you offer in-person therapy?

Yes. Our office is located in downtown Duluth in a quiet, welcoming, and confidential setting designed to feel calm and approachable.

How often will I come to therapy?

Many clients begin with weekly sessions, especially early in the process when building momentum and trust with a therapist.

Over time, some clients transition to biweekly sessions depending on goals and needs.

Therapy is collaborative, and session frequency can be adjusted over time.

How long does therapy last?

There is no standard timeline for therapy.

Some people seek short-term support around a specific challenge or transition, while others benefit from longer-term therapy focused on deeper patterns, trauma work, identity exploration, or ongoing personal growth.

Therapy moves at a pace that feels supportive and sustainable for each individual.

Is therapy confidential?

Yes. What you share in therapy remains confidential except in a few legally required situations involving safety concerns, abuse, or court orders.

Your therapist will review confidentiality policies in detail during your first session so you understand exactly what to expect.

What if I need to cancel a session?

We kindly ask that you provide at least 24 hours notice if you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment. Your session time is reserved especially for you, and late cancellations or missed appointments may be subject to a $100 fee. Your therapist will review our cancellation policy with you during your first session.

What if I’m nervous to start therapy?

Feeling nervous is completely normal.

Starting therapy often involves vulnerability, uncertainty, and stepping into something unfamiliar. Many people worry about:

  • being judged
  • not knowing what to say
  • whether therapy will actually help
  • opening up to someone new

Our goal is to create a space where you feel safe showing up exactly as you are — without pressure to perform or explain everything perfectly.

Do you ever use humor in sessions?

Sometimes, yes.

We believe therapy can be meaningful and emotionally deep while still making space for humor, lightness, and authentic human moments when appropriate.

We do not take ourselves too seriously, and many clients appreciate therapy that feels approachable, grounded, and real.

How does insurance work for therapy?

Insurance coverage varies depending on your specific plan and benefits. Many plans cover outpatient mental health services, though you may still have:

  • copays
  • deductibles
  • coinsurance
  • session limits

If you are unsure about coverage, we encourage you to reach out to your insurance company to inquire about your mental health benefits. You can also check your coverage by calling the member services number on the back of your insurance card and asking the following questions:

  • Do I have outpatient mental health benefits?
  • What is my deductible and has it been met? (You can also inquire about co-pays and co-insurance.)
  • How many sessions per year does my health insurance cover?
  • What is the coverage amount per therapy session?
  • Is approval required from my primary care physician?
